Dense ion clouds of 0 . 1 – 2 keV ions inside the CPS - region observed by Astrid - 2

چکیده
Data from the Astrid-2 satellite taken between April and July 1999 show several examples of dense ion clouds in the 0.1–2 keV energy range inside the inner magnetosphere, both in the northern and southern hemispheres. These inner magnetospheric ion clouds are found predominantly in the early morning sector, suggesting that they could have originated from substorm-related ion injections on the night side. However, their location and density show no correlation with Kp, and their energy-latitude dispersion is not easily reproduced by a simple particle drift model. Therefore, these ion clouds are not necessarily caused by substormrelated ion injections. Alternative explanations for the ion clouds are the direct solar wind injections and up-welling ions from the other hemisphere. These explanations do not, however, account for all of the observations.

The MEDUSA electron and ion spectrometer and the PIA ultraviolet photometers on Astrid-2
The miniature electron and ion spectrometer MEDUSA on Astrid-2 consists of two “top-hat”-type spherical electrostatic analyzers, sharing a common top-hat. Fast energy sweeps (16 electron sweeps and 8 ion sweeps per second) allow for very high temporal resolution measurements of a two-dimensional slice of the particle distribution function. The energy range covered, is in the case of electrons, ...

We present for the ®rst time a statistical study of 350 keV ion events of a magnetospheric origin upstream from Earth's bow shock. The statistical analysis of the 50±220 keV ion events observed by the IMP-8 spacecraft shows: (1) a dawn±dusk asymmetry in ion distributions, with most events and lower intensities upstream from the quasi-parallel pre-dawn side (4 LT± 6 LT) of the bow shock, (2) hig...

Background: The fatal effect of ionizing radiation on cells depends on Linear Energy Transfer (LET) level. The distribution of ionizing radiation is sparse and homogeneous for low LET radiations such as X or γ, but it is dense and concentrated for high LET radiation such as heavy-ions radiation. Material and Methods: Chinese hamster ovary cells (CHO-K1) were exposed to 4 Gy Fe-ion 2000 keV/...

Context. Within dense interstellar clouds, from their periphery to regions deep inside, ice mantles on dust grains are exposed to cosmic-ray irradiation. Various swift ions contribute from protons to iron in the keV to TeV energy range. Observations show that in some lines of sight condensed CO molecules are an important component of the ice. Aims. We irradiate CO ices with Ni ions of relativel...
